Production Log 1.

This week we watched the opening sequences of previous candidates and graded them against the mark scheme. By watching these examples, we were able to judge how well these candidates planned their piece and related it to the theme of BSR.

I personally would argue that there was quite a bit of a division between the grades where some candidates got the top level and others got the lower level. This grade was reflected in their work as they had not put as much thought into it when it came to filming their piece. Strengths that I had identified in the pieces were that some people kept their narrative very simple and didn’t have much going on in theirs, which is how the opening 2 minutes of a film generally are. An example of this being ‘Written Syria’. Also, I liked the use of sound and Mise-en-Scene in the pieces. For example, ‘Straight Edge’ had an extremely good use of Mise-en-Scene as they used locations which were very dirty, and had graffiti on the walls. This is very common in BSR films where they try to create a very urban location. However, some weaknesses in the opening sequences were that some of the pieces looked too much like trailers, for example the credits were shown at the end of the sequence, voiceovers were used which is not very common to the BSR content.

Assessing these pieces is a good way to see where candidates tend to gain marks and fall back on themselves, by keeping all these examples in mind and avoiding their mistakes, I hope to produce a piece which is unique yet keeps true to the content of BSR films. In my piece, I will try to emulate small things such as the use of costume, locations, dialogue as these are all very common and pretty much the same in most BSR films.
