Film4 Ideologies.

Looking for Eric Trailer:

  • The characters used in this trailer or film are all white British characters, which is who film4 normally target their films at, using these characters, will engage the audience more and reinforce British social realism.
  • Again, the places used in the film seem to be very run down, and urban locations, not very lavish or extravagant, this emphasises the rough and cockney lifestyle the characters may lead.
  • Cultural references are shown through the men in the end of the trailer wearing uniforms and the footballer Eric wearing the football kit of a British football team.
  • This film fits the typical mould of film 4 films as they seem to include key themes of violence, isolation and racism, as one of the characters mocks an Indian politician Gandhi.

Submarine Trailer:

  • Film 4 normally use young white characters in particular as most of their films show the type of struggles and problems the characters face within society and families. Here we have a young boy Oliver who is lost within his family and cannot seem to find himself. Also, he is paired with a young girl who has a similar background so are shown to be together.
  • The places used in this trailer represent film 4's low budget locations for example, under a bridge, in a small house and in an average looking school building.
  • As mentioned above, this film is about a boy who is isolated within his family and wants to find himself as a person and achieve in life. His sidekick in the film faces the same struggle so they understand each other well and help each other along the way.

Four Lions Trailer:

  • This film does not seem to fit the pattern as well as the others as it targets more towards a Muslim audience in Britain. All the characters used here are young Muslim men which it what makes this film target the audience that it does.
  • The film includes shots in run down areas of northern England as well as Pakistan as it shows the lifestyle of both audiences that it is trying to represent.
  • The trailer includes such things as British shops, a few odd characters and road signs like 'Heathrow' which are in England and the audience can familiarise themselves with.
  • This is typically a film 4 storyline as it includes violence, foul language and mockery of serious key concepts which in other countries like America or Iran, would be seen as racist and would be severely offended.

Edit Workshop Evaluation

180 Degree Rule:
I used the 180 degree rule throughout the video, this means that whatever the subject in the frame was, the camera was not moved to the opposite side of the object.
E.g.
The image on the right shows a top view of what the layout when shooting should look like. When filming every scene I ensured that the camera stayed to the left or right hand side of the object, depending on what side I was filming from.

                                                 Rule of Thirds:
When filming my shots, whether they were longshots, midshots or closeups, I tried to keep the rule of thirds to the best of my ability when filming faces especially.

                                                        Match On Action:
I used match on action only once in my film, this is shown when Ellie is running up the stairs. I chose to show it as shes running up the stairs because it looks very natural and realistic rather than using it for the door when she is coming into the room.

Challenges During Production:
The only thing I found not exactly challenging, but slightly tricky during filming was finding the time to go and shoot at the locations I had agreed on with my partner as sometimes I was unable to shoot on certain days and vice versa, this made it a little inconvenient but we managed to get it all done in the end. If I were to film this again, I would pick a closer location or try and keep the storyline simple so that if needed, we could just use the school as our filming location rather than branching out in the beginning and then finding it difficult to go and shoot there.

Overall Strengths:
I would say that my overall strength in this piece of work would be the post production. Bearing in mind that I had no experience in using the new iMovie programme, I am pleased with the editing outcome, and I kept to the storyboard pretty well and used majority of the shots I had drawn up. My favourite 2 shots in this exercise are the match on action one and the establishing shot in the beginning where I show the clinic as it looks so realistic.

Overall Weaknesses:
The main weakness which stands out to me in this piece is the change in lighting, whilst filming the other indoor shots, I left the establishing shot till last and when it came to film this clinic shot, it had all of a sudden gotten really dark and I had already filmed half of the outdoor shots in a different location so the natural lighting doesn't match up at all, during the edit workshop I noticed this so all I could potentially do is just bring down the lighting and brightness of some of the shots which makes the shot look more unnatural and pretty bad.

Overall Improvements:
I am very pleased with the outcome despite all the flaws in the piece. However, next time I'd stick to a slightly simpler storyline or try and find an alternative place to film as its not always possible to go far out and get to film certain parts of the work during a school week so using a closer location or even the school itself will help save on time and allow you to finish your film quicker. Also, I would give more thought into the actual planning, this includes drawing up the storyboard and the actual time management in order to get the work filmed on time and well.

Continuity Editing Exercise

The aim of this task was to create and shoot a scenario which included a few basic points..

'A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.'

In this task, the key media skills I was trying to demonstrate in particular included shot reverse shot, match on action, 180 degree rule and the rule of thirds.

180 Degree Rule:                                                                          Rule of Thirds:

In this task I worked with a pupil in my class called Ellie. I quite enjoyed this arrangement mainly due to the fact that I was pleased with how enthusiastic she was towards this task considering she has never studied media before and asked for help whenever she needed it.
For this scenario, I really wanted to do something different to everyone else in the class, and to those I had seen examples of, so we both decided on a scenario together but once the storyboard was drawn and it came to filming we had to be slightly more realistic and change the idea slightly in order to get the shots that we wanted; this meant tweaking the storyboard shots slightly.
